Walk up past the water tank and the grooming starts at the end of the plowed road. Rolled it yesterday and it’s decent for classic, a bit narrow and chunky for skating, but today’s new snow will help. Should get set again later this afternoon.Feb 17, 2021 | Backcountry
Follow the blue blazes (diamonds) down to Peterson Lake instead of the packed trail that leads to creek skiing and bush whacking. They divert below the steepest hill ~1/2 mile after making the turn away from Auke Mountain. The 2 miles of forest trail below Peterson...Feb 16, 2021 | Backcountry
Took a few future Olympians up Spaulding to celebrate the eve of Elizabeth Peratrovich Day. Watch out outside of the well packed track, that crust will nip at your ankles! Thankful for light clouds and snow-tracked hearts…Feb 8, 2021 | Backcountry
Mon morn groomed skate & classic as well as trail across the road. It’s brisk but snow & skiing are great! Dress warmly.Jan 5, 2021 | Backcountry
On Sunday the meadows were amazing with 6″ of soft powder atop the old crust from days gone by. Since then we’ve had rain down low but the meadows may still be great.Dec 17, 2020 | Backcountry
Skied on Sunday and there was plenty of snow once you get out of the trees. Had to hike skis up from the John Muir parking lot. Should be great fun with all this new snow!Dec 12, 2020 | Backcountry
Ha, the dike trail has enough packed snow to get you to the wetlands where the wide open greets you with an inch of snow. The snow is heavy enough for a good glide without sticks or rocks, and the patchy fog made for a dreamy ski…Dec 5, 2020 | Backcountry
There is still 4′ of snow at the cabin. The bowl has lots turns available either in the wet cream or or firmer areas where the snow machines have packed the slopes. Many avalanches have run on the steep slopes of the headwall. Nothing has run on the moderate...Nov 27, 2020 | Backcountry
Lake creek trail to Spaulding Meadows was wonderful today. Use your spikes up until the Meadows then strap on some boards for amazing strides.Nov 7, 2020 | Backcountry
On Friday, the Lake Creek Trail is skiable from the trailhead (with skins). The meadows are awesome. Southern meadows are fluffy snow on firm base. The northern meadows are fluffy snow on breakable crust. Fabulous skiing. If your downhill skills are top notch you can...Nov 5, 2020 | Backcountry
Dan Moller bowl was great for backcountry skiing. There was 4″ of fluff on a very firm base. The meadows in the bowl and down low on the trail were great for turns. The bobsled portion of the trail was a little thin.

Beautiful! Not good enough for crust skating but a lovely place to tromp around in the fresh pure air and...Feb 22, 2020 | Backcountry
Hiked up to the first big Spaulding meadow then skied across and down to the cabin, then out the cabin trail. The meadows have an amazing base with just a few inches on top that make skiing wonderful. Nobody has yet skied from the cabin toward Auk Mtn. Maybe...Feb 19, 2020 | Backcountry
The traverse on 2/17 was excellent with deep snow. Twelve people packed most of the trail between the two cabins. We and others before us chipped ice off the blue diamonds. There was 10″ of snow on slush on Peterson Lake. Beware. We were able to ski all the way...Feb 14, 2020 | Backcountry
The backcountry was phenomenal and only 1 snow machine Friday. Great powder. The run down was soft with lots of snow on the sides.Feb 2, 2020 | Backcountry
There’s a foot of powder up there, tracked pretty well not only up to the cabin but also across to the upper meadow then down. I skied all the way to the parking lot, a rare opportunity.
