Want to expand Juneau’s best cross country skiing? Final round of public comments on the Montana Creek Master Plan are due March 29th to parks.rec@juneau.gov. This plan encompasses the Montana Creek valley, Windfall Lake, and Spaulding Meadow areas and phew – we’ve come along way! We appreciate the hard work of the CBJ Parks and Recreation Department, US Forest Service, Alaska Departments of Natural Resources and Transportation, and Trail Mix for their work on the most recent draft.

Read the current draft here or visit the project website here (includes last round of public comments). Please consider submitting your own comments thanking the management agencies for the inclusion, and further development, of non-motorized cross-country ski trails.

What We Like (Keep it in and skiable!)

  • The connector trail from Montana Creek to Skater’s Cabin.
  • Rehabilitation of the Montana Creek to Windfall Lake and Herbert River Road trails.
  • Replacement of the now broken bridge across Montana Creek.
  • Increased access to Spaulding Meadows from the Montana Creek valley.
  • Dedicated, non-motorized Nordic ski trails in the Spaulding Meadows region.
  • University – Auke Lake – Auke Bay Elementary Community Connector Trail.

Put It Back In (Please!)

  • A ski trail on the northeast side of the Montana Creek valley (other side of the creek from currently groomed dirt road).

We Want Less Of (No thanks, status quo is fine.)

  • Please do not add a second motorized access to Spaulding Meadows. Either build the 25 Mile Access (as proposed) and close the current Lake Creek access, or vise versa.

Again, comments must be received by March 29th at 5pm and can be emailed to Parks.Rec@juneau.gov.

Don’t delay! Your comments have already made a difference and will continue to impact the future of Juneau’s favorite skiing destination! This may be your last chance to influence the outcome of the final master plan.

Thanks for your work,

~The JNSC Board
