You might not know it, but our ski trial maintenance is done by an all-volunteer crew of groomers. Leading the charge are our Trail Bosses Ray Imel, Wayne Carnes, Doug Sturm, Don Thomas, and Peter Ord. The JNSC Board recently passed a resolution in recognition of their tireless efforts, and a special appreciation to Doug and Peter, who went above and beyond the call of duty during the month of February to ensure daily grooming amid a torrent of obstacles thrown their way.
Read the full resolution below, then get out there and give them a hug, buy ’em a beer, and wish them a restful off season!
A Proclamation of Appreciation from the Juneau Nordic Ski Club
The Juneau Nordic Ski Club (JNSC) provides an unparalleled service to the community of Juneau: regular grooming and maintenance of cross country ski trails throughout the borough.
The 2023 JNSC Board of Directors extend our sincerest appreciation to our Trail Bosses
Ray Imel,
Wayne Carnes,
Doug Sturm,
Don Thomas, and
Peter Ord
for making Juneau an amazing place to ski (and live) throughout the winter. During a wet first half of the season, you eked out skiing wherever it could be had for the enjoyment of hundreds. So,
be it resolved that the JNSC is grateful beyond measure for your work to rescue the first half of our ski season.
Then came February, and with it nearly 50 inches of snow. Suddenly, dreams of blue wax skiing and endless laps on the Lake were resurrected as our all-volunteer grooming corps laid corduroy and set track on Pioneer Road, Salmon Creek, the Mendenhall Campground and Lake, and even into the Dredge Lakes trail system; all provided during an especially busy and trying time.
Given this, the 2023 JNSC Board of Directors extends a special appreciation and acknowledgement to the exhaustive work
Doug Sturm
and
Peter Ord
endured while short-staffed and -machined the month of February 2023:
- Filling in and coordinating grooming efforts on Pioneer Road.
- Fixing blown out trailer tires.
- Dealing with not one, not two, but three pulled out of service for repair.
- Endless shuttling of the remaining two working machines between trailheads (Pioneer Road, Salmon Creek, Skater’s Cabin), all while transporting other machines back and forth for repairs.
- Accommodating special requests for local events and youth team races.
- The countless other things (scheduling of volunteers, fueling machines, etc) that are almost too numerous to list here.
Be it resolved that the second half of Juneau’s Nordic ski season was carried on the shoulders of Doug and Peter, resulting in some of the best skiing this community has experienced in recent memory.
On behalf of the roughly 1,000 JNSC members, we most sincerely thank you!
