If you would like to volunteer to help JNSC complete the following tasks, please e-mail JNSC. Descriptions of each type of volunteer work follow:

Valley Trail Groomers

One of our most important and most visible functions is to groom the Nordic trails at the Mendenhall Campground and the lake. We could use a few more dedicated volunteers to help spread the workload. Because there is some equipment maintenance involved, we are looking for people who are experienced operating and taking care of machinery, and who take pride in producing a top quality product. Not everyone can be selected for this job, but if you feel you have the right aptitude, we’d love to hear from you.

Eaglecrest Nordic Rangers

As part of our agreement with Eaglecrest, the JNSC has the responsibility to provide one club volunteer each weekend day and holiday for up to four hours to patrol the Nordic trails at Eaglecrest. The volunteer is responsible for surveying skiers for feedback on Nordic skiing issues, educating Nordic trail users about the JNSC and encouraging users to obtain the appropriate trail ticket or pass if they have failed to do so. It consists of wearing an identifying vest while skiing the trails and conversing with skiers. This is a great opportunity to communicate with skiers about supporting the efforts of JNSC and Eaglecrest for the many services we provide. It is also a fun chance for you to meet other skiers while getting your workout, and it helps generate support for the growth of Nordic skiing in the Juneau area as well.

Race Hosts

We are looking for volunteers to be race hosts. It is a very simple task that requires obtaining the race box with the bibs, stop watches, etc. from the previous race host, preferably a couple days before the event; contacting the facility to insure the tracks will be set before the race; skiing the course before the event to see if there are any complications with the track; and marking of the course start and finish lines. At the start line you register all the participants into the appropriate categories, then start the event and take times for the constants. If you wish, you can fax the results to the newspaper.

Trail Workers

JNSC usually brushes the Nordic ski trails in the fall and early winter. We also repair the trail tread by adding gavel fill and installing culverts, repairing bridges, digging ditches, etc. We are even in the process of creating additional trails to expand Nordic skiing opportunities in the area.

JNSC Board Members

If you are interested in promoting any of the various functions and activities of the club, and you are willing to commit to taking responsibility for your share of the board’s responsibilities, please consider offering to become a board member. We try not to spend too much time on bureaucracy and red tape, since our goal is to maximize the quality and quantity of our skiing time. But we do require that you be willing invest some energy into board priorities and follow through on the projects and tasks that are yours. There are a multitude of ways to contribute: spearheading trail improvements, organizing groomers, promoting memberships, collaborating with Eaglecrest and other groups, applying for grants, sponsoring events, keeping records, and so on. If you’re interested, please email JNSC or talk to a current board member.
